The WildlifeDensity xxxxxxxx installation file includes Version 2.5 of WildlifeDensity and accompanying files to assist its installation and use.

REQUIREMENTS:

WildlifeDensity is designed to work on a recent model Apple 'Macintosh' computer with a current version of Apple's macOS operating system installed, such as macOS 13 (Ventura), macOS 14 (Sonoma) or a later version. The more recent the operating system, the better the program should run. It is unlikely to operate correctly on processors with other operating systems.

From November 2023 onwards, Apple has required that independently-produced apps such as WildlifeDensity are notarised (authenticated) using an Apple-approved procedure to identify any code-signing issues and malicious components before routine operation. This particular WildlifeDensity version (WD-2_5) contains some important changes from earlier versions that may not have been fully notarised. The most significant of these was to replace operator control of class interval width during program operation with automatic width selection, thus standardising followup calculations controlled by different investigators. You may therefore be required to implement an appropriate workaround procedure before WildlifeDensity app will run as intended. (This is included in Step 3 of the installation procedure below).

It is useful if your computer also includes an installed version of Microsoft Excel for Mac or a similar spreadsheet program useful for data uploading, and an app that can read text and other files, such as the TextEdit app installed on current Macs. [It is helpful but not essential to have also a dedicated text application as well, such as Bare Bones Software's BBEdit. BBEdit is available aa a free download at www.barebones.com/products/bbedit/demo.html.]

Download and install whichever of these you require either now or once you have installed WildlifeDensity.

TO INSTALL WildlifeDensity:

1. Version 2_5 of the WildlifeDensity app comes within an installation file called 'Install_WD-2_5.zip' that has an internal structure transitional from that in earlier versions. This not only replaces investigator control of class interval width in earlier versions with automatic width selection, there are also some consequential but relatively minor format modifications. It also includes a new, concise page-numbered internal manual called 'WildlifeDensity Manual, accessed by opening Help on the menu bar and selecting 'Help Manual' You may find it useful to print one copy to keep separately. [The more complete manual called Techniques Manual and Users Guide included with WildlifeDensity program downloads in the past is currently being upgraded and will be available in due course.]

Download the WildlifeDensity-2_5.zip file to an appropriate macOS computer. The application and its icon should appear on the Desktop or in the Downloads folder. If it appears in the Downloads folder, drag-and-drop it to the Desktop.

2. Double-click the current installation file to mount it. A Finder window showing several files should appear. It contains:

 * the installation guide Installation README v.2.5.txt (in text format),

 * an introductory guide 'WildlifeDensity QuickStart v.2.5.pdf' (in .pdf format),

 * a folder called WildlifeDensity_Resources' containing field data sheets suitable for photocopying (in .pdf format) and sample data (in .WDdata format), and

 * a new 'WildlifeDensity.app.zip' installation file.

3. Double-click the new WildlifeDensity installation file to open it. A separate window should appear on the Desktop containing the app itself. Double-clicking its icon should enable you to open it and show its icon in the dock.

If instead a security message appears with the wording 'WildlifeDensity app can't be opened because Apple cannot check it for malicious software', carry out the following 'Gatekeeper' procedure:

  Select 'OK' on the message panel;

  Go to System Settings in the macOS program on your computer;

  Select 'Privacy & Security' amongst the options listed;

  Scan down the list of topics until you reach the 'Security' heading;

  Select the 'Open Anyway' button in that section;

  If prompted to do so, enter your Apple password, then select 'Modify Settings';

  If asked, or another security message appears, select 'Open'. Either way, a WildlifeDensity icon should appear in the dock. Double-clicking that icon should open the app.

Repeat the Gatekeeper procedure in Step 3 if xxxx the app-opening process is ever blocked again.

4. Next, drag-and-drop the WildlifeDensity.app icon into the Applications file in the Finder on your computer. If you find any older WildlifeDensity versions in the Applications file, either archive or delete them before proceeding further. To delete them, turn them off and drag their icon upwards well out of the dock. Make sure you keep only the most recent WildlifeDensity version in the Applications folder.

Also, if you want the app's icon to show permanently in the dock, move its location (to the left) out of the 'currently-running' section of the dock at its right-hand end. Close any older versions of the app in the dock and delete them.

5. If you dont have such a folder already, open a new folder with the name WildlifeDensity Resources in a convenient place on your Mac. Drag-and-drop the 'WildlifeDensity QuickStart and WildlifeDensity Resources' files into this folder. Discard or archive any older versions.

6. Close the README file and open the WildlifeDensity QuickStart file. It provides a general introduction to the program itself.
